Calcutta - general information
Calcutta (or Kolkata) - the former capital of India - with the population of over 4.5 million is the fourth largest city in India. The city is located on the eastern bank Hooghly River, about 130 km (80 miles) inland from the river's mouth at the Bay of Bengal. Calcutta, like many other large cities in the world, struggles with a problem of severe pollution, poverty and traffic congestion.
